Rewarding environmental excellence
The IBEC environment awards are held every two years and recognise the achievements of Irish companies that combine innovation, financial savings and environmental concerns. There are four categories to compete in:
- Management Award
- Product and Services Award
- Process Award
- International Business Cooperation Award
Category 1: The Management award
This award is a chance for your company to be rewarded for its commitment to an environmental management system.
Past Irish winners of this award include:

Vodafone (2011/12) Green Agenda “Goodbye paper bills, hello trees” campaign.
Abbott (2009/10) “Green Plan” campaign.
Port of Cork (2007/08) Achieved certification to the ECOPORTS PERS Environmental Management System.
Category 2: The Product and services award
This award is aimed at companies that have developed and/ or implemented a new product or service that is environmentally efficient.
Past Irish winners of this award include:

Larkin Engineering (2011/12) Eco-redesign of its 120 litre jumbo bin.
JFC Manufacturing (2009/10) Converting a waste stream of bottles into a raw material for use in the manufacture of pipes.
Ecocem Ireland (2007/08) Recycling of an industrial by-product in an innovative cement production process.
Category 3: The Process award
The winning entry of this award will have developed and/ or implemented a new production solution that makes an outstanding contribution to sustainable development using ‘best available technology or techniques’ i.e. a change in your business process to provide cost savings, efficiency and to benefit the environment.

Roadstone Wood (2011/12) Redesign of the pumping process in their quarry resulting in savings in electricity consumption.
Wyeth Newbridge (2009/10) Design of a WWTP to reduce active pharmaceutical ingredients in wastewater discharged to sewer.
Grainger Sawmills (2007/08) Achieving energy independence by installing a CHP plant.
Category 4: The International business cooperation award
Applicants for this award should be involved in a business relationship involving at least one private entity from the European Union, and another from the private, public, non-governmental and academic sector in a developing or emerging country which makes a significant contribution to one or more of the three elements of sustainable development (environmental protection, economic development, financial equity and social development) by transferring or sharing knowledge or technology or a management system.
Ireland has yet to put forward an entrant to the EU in this category. Previous winners of this category at EU level:

Project: "MicroPowerEconomy" their project to develop a business and risk management model for electricity supply in off-grid villages in Senegal with the aim to attract large scale private investments for renewable energy power supply components to be operated in island-grids.
Ferrovial Spain (2010)
Project: Maji ni Uhai ('Water is life') a project to construct a water supply and sanitation infrastructure in the Serengeti, Tanzania to provide access to safe water.
KIT (Royal Tropical Institute) Holding/Mali BioCarburant SA Netherlands (2008)
Project: Production in Mali of sustainable biodiesel from jatropha nuts, a drought-resistant non-food crop that can be grown on non-agricultural land. The fuel, produced and sold by a joint venture company set up by KIT, supplements farmers' incomes, thus reducing poverty.
