Repak's Pakman Awards 2016: now open for entries





Repak's Pakman Awards 2016 are now open for entry. The Pakman Awards are a national awards programme that recognises and supports excellence in waste management and recycling.

The Pakman Awards are now open to both Repak and Non-Repak members. Entries are now being invited from organisations, business community groups and individuals who have shown excellence in their application of waste management, recycling, waste prevention and environmental initiatives.

Entries are invited in the following categories:
  • Business Recycling Champion
This award is open to an organisation or group within the retail sector who exhibit and demonstrate leadership in managing and recycling their company’s waste. The “Champion” should be able to show passion and best practice examples to drive and sustain recycling with a zero waste concept.

  • Community Recycling Project of the year
This award is aimed at community groups or those in a partnership with their Local Authority, who have been proactive in starting environmental related projects within their local area. Applicants need to demonstrate how they have raised awareness in their communities regarding topics such as composting, re-use, recycling, waste minimisation, educational talks etc.

  • Local Authority Recycling Champion
This award is to acknowledge the personal drive and commitment given by an Environmental Officer or elected representative of a Local Authority. Evidence will need to be displayed to show their contribution towards the achievement of high recycling levels within the Council’s respective administrative area. The winner of this award will be able to demonstrate significant achievements in the recycling sector.

  • Environmental Education and Awareness Initiative
This award is open to any individual, community group, school, NGO and company etc., to enter. The objective of this award is to promote an initiative that encourages and stimulates “outside the box” ideas that increase recycling and resource waste management.

  • Bring Centre of the Year
This award is open to any manned or unmanned, purpose designed facility operated by or on behalf of a Local Authority or a private sector Recovery Operator. The centres should have a good site performance, high levels of recycling and other elements such as environmental awareness and marketing and communication to publicise the site. Other features to be included would be, innovativeness such as site layout, unique market ends and an unusually extensive range of materials.

  • Waste Prevention Business Award
This award is open to any business who can demonstrate the steps that have been taken in trying to prevent waste and use resources efficiently. Entrants will need to display the significant impact that their initiative has achieved and how it was accomplished. Applicants should show how waste prevention was communicated throughout the Organisation, be it through the implementation of campaigns, education and awareness schemes.

  • Professional Services Award
This award category is open to all organisations from Law firms to Banks to Accountancy Firms to Environmental Consultants to Not for Profit Organisations to Hospitals etc. Judges would like hear from companies who have initiated new practices such as paperless billing, energy reduction, cleaner production processes or reduction of waste in order to make their business more sustainable.

  • Green Transport of the Year
This award is open to all organisations in logistics and transport in both the private and public sectors. The winner of this award will have clearly demonstrated the following: CO2 emissions saved, developments in fuel efficiency, vehicle emissions controls and any long-term goals such as changing from fossil-based fuel to other replacements such as renewable energy.

  • Food Waste Management
This award is aimed at the hospitality sector or any organisation that produce more than 50kg of food waste per week such as, pubs, supermarkets, restaurants, hospitals, hotels, canteens in office buildings, colleges etc.

  • Waste Collection Operator of the Year (Large)
This award is open to all nationwide large collectors (more than 100 employees) in the Waste Industry such as mixed dry recyclables, hazardous waste and food waste etc. Entrants must be able to demonstrate a high-level of service in waste collection or recycling. It will be measured in terms of customer base, consistency of service, range of materials accepted, customer education and awareness and where the company /organisation goes above and beyond the standard level.

  • Waste Collection Operator of the Year (Small)
This award is open to all nationwide small collectors (less than 100 employees) in the Waste Industry such as mixed dry recyclables, hazardous waste and food waste etc. Entrants must be able to demonstrate a high-level of service in waste collection or recycling. It will be measured in terms of customer base, consistency of service, range of materials accepted, customer education and awareness and where the company /organisation goes above and beyond the standard level.

  • WEEE Champion
This award is open to a business (retail or non), community organisation or individual that can demonstrate the steps that have been taken to increase WEEE take-back rates and improve efficiencies and communication within the system.

  • Battery Champion
This award is open to a business (retail or non), community organisation, school or individual that can demonstrate the extra steps they have taken to increase waste battery take-back for recycling and increase awareness of the need to recycle this waste stream.

  • Pakman Award – Overall Winner
This prestigious award is only applicable to each winner from the 13 categories above. The Judges will pick a winner on the basis of their outstanding contribution. They will be crowned the overall winner of The National Award for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management.
