A European Union that works

In 2014, to mark the new European Parliament and European Commission term, Ibec Europe published its vision for a European Union that works for Irish business, with a list of priorities for both Institutions.

An EU that understands and responds to the needs of business is more important than ever, providing effective leadership and real reform. Ibec's vision calls for stronger engagement between the European Commission and the business world, with a commitment to reducing excessive red tape, promoting investment and stimulating trade, supporting a more competitive and innovative European economy, in addition to securing an equitable and cost effective agreement on global climate change.

Critical issues facing the European Parliament include the need to improve the quality of European laws and regulation, complete the single market in services and make Europe more attractive as a location for global innovation-based investment. Irish business needs an EU that encourages investment and enhances trade. The European Parliament should work to foster a skilled and flexible work force, reduce administrative burdens and facilitate easier access to finance, especially for smaller firms. Ireland's 11 MEPs must also also understand the needs of Irish business and build alliances with like-minded partners to promote a resurgent, globally competitive EU.
