Issue 4 - October 2017

The fourth issue of Ibec's popular Europe & Global Focus comes as the European Council meets for its crucial October summit.

This quarter has seen momentum growing around the future of Europe debate with member states looking ahead, despite the continuing uncertainty around Brexit negotiations. It has been an autumn of speeches: UK Prime Minister May’s speech in Florence set out her views on the UK's future relationship with the EU, European Commission President Juncker’s State of the EU address declared that “the wind is back in Europe’s sails”, whilst new French President Macron delivered his ambitious vision for the future of the EU. Meanwhile, we also saw the re-election of Chancellor Angela Merkel in Germany, whilst the Estonian Presidency of the EU worked to advance the digital agenda, broaden EU trade and investment policy and encourage a final agreement on revisions to the Posting of Workers Directive.

As always, this edition brings you news of Ibec's latest activities in Brussels and further afield. Our Brexit campaign delivered a highly successful launch of our latest policy paper, Brexit: challenges with solutions and a number of high-level meetings with key decision makers. We also enhanced our media partnership with POLITICO Europe and signed a new partnership with the European Investment Bank to promote investment opportunities for Irish business. We also marked the implementation of the CETA agreement with events in both Ireland and Canada.

Every quarter, Ibec Europe & Global Focus aims to give our members and stakeholders a flavour of what’s impacting Irish business at EU and global level, Our EU & International Affairs team is always available to engage on any of the topics discussed.
