National Workplace Wellbeing Day 31st March 2017
Employers across Ireland are being urged to sign up for Ireland’s third National Workplace Wellbeing Day on Friday, 31 March 2017. Last year over 300 companies of all sizes from across the public and private sectors participated in the annual event which aims to improve employee wellbeing through promoting better exercise and nutrition in the workplace. New researchı shows that only a quarter of workers in Ireland (26%) take the recommended level of exercise for a healthy lifestyle each week.
The nationwide campaign, an initiative of Food Drink Ireland (FDI), is supported by Ibec and its CEO, Danny McCoy and President, Anne Heraty, CEO, CPL Limited joined the Minister for State at the launch. Danny McCoy said: “We would urge every employer and employee to get involved in Workplace Wellbeing Day on 31 March. We know we need to get healthier as a nation and the workplace, where we spend so much of our time, is an ideal place to encourage healthier lifestyles. Furthermore, research amongst employees in Ireland shows that the majority are more likely to stay longer with employers who show an interest in their health and wellbeing².”
AbbVie, Janssen, Pfizer, Accenture, Royal College of Surgeons Ireland and PWC were among the hundreds of employers that supported the 2016 event. The wide range of activities organised by employers to mark the day included healthy breakfasts, health checks and talks, exercise and fitness classes, cookery demonstrations and the “Lunchtime Mile” - a one mile cycle, jog, run, walk or swim for employees in the vicinity of their workplace. This year, on Friday, 31 March, employers are again being asked to put a special focus on wellbeing through promoting existing and new initiatives available in their workplace as well as hosting special events for staff.
Employers are also being encouraged to enter the national Workplace Wellbeing Awards which will be announced on the day. Sponsored by Mercer, the awards recognise employers across the public and private sector that are excelling at promoting workplace wellbeing within their organisations. The Central Statistics Office and Dublin secondary school, Colaiste Bride were among last year’s winners.
