Government Export Trade Council completes review of trade, tourism and investment strategy
Description:
In the programme for Government the coalition committed to establish an Export Trade Council to strengthen coordination across all key departments and agencies. Membership to be divided equally between government and private sector representatives.Implication(s):
The Government Export Trade Council provides an opportunity to review implementation of the Government's trade strategy, 'Trading and investing in a smart economy' and to look at trends and challenges in trade, tourism and investment. It also provides an opportunity to discuss progress reports from local market teams, led by ambassadors in the identified priority markets and to consider issues such as visas and fostering the key skills needed for business to trade internationally.Current Position:
On 24 February 2014, Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore launched the Review of the Government Trade, Tourism and Investment Strategy, which sets out a ‘new market approach’ for Ireland’s 27 priority markets and updates targets for growth in exports, investment, tourism and jobs. The review was carried out by the Government’s Export Trade Council with contributions from Ibec. The review concluded that there is a need for an evolution of the concept of priority markets towards a new market approach which aims to provide a more strategic, up-to-date, and nuanced direction for Ireland’s international trade, tourism, investment and education efforts.Contact:
